Glynis Lee is an Australian artist working primarily in printmaking and textile-based practices, with an expanded focus on three-dimensional forms, artist books, and installation. Her practice explores connections between culture, environment, and identity, with particular attention to ideas of place, belonging, and cultural memory.
Born and raised in Innisfail, North Queensland, Lee has been based in Darwin since 1994. Since 2022, she has also maintained a second home in Far North Queensland, dividing her time between both locations—regions that continue to strongly inform her visual language and conceptual concerns.
Lee graduated from Charles Darwin University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours, First Class). In her final year, she undertook an internship as an editioning printmaker at Northern Editions printmaking studio and gallery, where she continued to work until its closure in 2014. In May 2014, she completed a practice-based PhD in Visual Arts, further consolidating her research-driven, materially focused approach to art-making.
Her work draws inspiration from the natural environments of Northern Australia—plants, birds, insects, light, shadow, and pattern—combined with meditative, process-driven methods and references to scientific observation. Alongside this, her practice critically engages with questions of cultural identity, hybridity, and the experience of living between cultures, particularly in relation to Australian–Chinese heritage.
